Most professionals will be involved in some type of informal or formal learning situation on a regular basis throughout their career. Companies invest in professional development to keep their workforce current and ready for new business cycles. Reasons run from personal interest (innovators and early adopters) in new technologies, new advances in the field, institutional policy for professional development, certification/re-certification requirements, new job etc. The common theme is that it is purposeful and has a specific goal that motivates the individual - they can see the purpose, the benefit and the effort required.
